The Gender Cage
Coming of age during the 60s and 70s, I was part of the feminist movement. Never did I imagine that 40 years later, women would be more obsessed than ever about their appearance. Nor did I imagine that our power would still be measured in terms of weight, skin, hair, and of course, age.
Each "charm" represents a different form of genderization that affects our ability to become authentically human.
To make the charms, I have used a bead loom, photo transfers, polymer clay, bead/wire work, doll house miniatures and needlepoint.
My figure in the doorway is the female "thinker". I hope she chooses to leave the cage.
